"Students ( yes plural) of the Week" for 1st & 2nd week of August are Sid Franklin and Nick AyersSid and Nick are return students who started with me in 2008. Both of these students have spent more then a year training in the martial arts before persueing other interest. True perseverance never stops and these two young martial artists have shown this to us. They bring their love of martial arts with them to our school and for that they have been choosen "Student of the Week". I will need to take some recent pictures of them to do them justice so check the website next week for their recent pictures. "Student of the Week" for week ending May 22nd( I apologize for not updating and choosing a "Student of the Week" for the last few weeks. I will try harder to recognize the efforts of those students who really are practicing hard each week) All of you have done so well this week but one student has taken a completely new approach to his practice and has re-gained his self control in class. AJ Clevinger has been my student for about 3 years and over the last week (he shows up for every class) has shown an amazing increase in self discipline. AJ attitude while performing the hand techniques has changed from an attitude of finish the move quickly and not worry about technique to an attitude of determination to perform the technique correct everytime. It is because of this determination that I picked AJ as "Student of the Week". Keep this determined attitude AJ, it is what you need to achieve success "Congratulation" on being choosen "Student of the Week". I need a recent picture of AJ. I will get one at the Pizza Party this weekend.
Student of the week for The Last week in April ( I missed updating "Student of the Week for one week ) It was extremely difficult to choose just one "Student of the Week" this week. All of you have done so well but I think 3 of you really shined. Taylor Fraser, Emma Holsinger, & Sophie Young have really stood out this week. Your effort in class this week showed that you were doing your best. Taylor being recognized for helping to teach other lower ranking students their Kata's (courtesy), Emma stayed focus on her moves( perseverance ) and Sophie showed her determination to throw good blocks and punches Indomitable Spirit)during our practice of the basics. "Congratulation" to the 3 of you for being choosen "Student of the Week". Taylor Fraser Emma Holsinger & Sophie Young
Student of the week for The 2nd week in April Kaleb Ramirez has been choosen as "Student of the Week" for this week because of his tenacity to get his moves right. His self control in class has grown to the level that some of my higher belt ranks do not have.Although Kaleb has only been with us a short while, he has progressed to the yellow belt level and will soon test for Purple belt. It is because of his "Self Control" in class and performing his moves with sharp, crisp, punches and blocks that I recognize Kaleb as "Student of the Week". "Congratulation" Kaleb. Kaleb Ramirez
Student of the week for The 1st week in April Kaitlyn Willard has been choosen as "Student of the Week" for this week. I lost track of when Kaitlyn joined our school. I know she has been with us for at least 3 years and just recently has been promoted to Red Belt. Over the last month Kaitlyn has been challenged with teaching one or two of the lower belt ranks their kata's and she met this challenge with enthusiasm. This past week she was tasked with a small group of blue belts and she did very well keeping their focus and training with them at a Red Belt level. Kaitlyn started with me as this shy quiet girl and she has grown to be the self confident martial artist , ready to take on the next task. It is this transformation that was recognized this week and this is why I choose Kaitlyn as "Student of the Week". "Congratulation" Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn WillardStudent of the week for March 21st to March 28th 2 students again have been choosen as "Student of the Week" for this week. Zachary Gunter, and Tyler Sisk . These two students have recently joined our school. They strive to make it to every class and this shows that they are truely dedicated martial artist. Although they are beginning White Belts these two really show the enthusiasm of a veteran student. When they enter the class, they quickly bow and "fall in line" eager to start their training. It is because of this passion that I choose Zack and Tyler as "Student of the Week". To two good friends starting to train in the martial arts "Congratulation". Tyler Sisk and Zachary GunterStudent of the week for March 14th to March 21stI have choosen 2 students as "Student of the Week" for this week. Giovunni Benson has shown that he is a
truely dedicated martial artist. Giovunni recieved his blue belt in May of 2008 and with true perseverance
has dedicated time practicing to achieve his Green Belt. It is because of this dedication that I recognize
Giovunni this week as the 1st "Student of the Week". Will Forrest is my second student choosen as "Student
of the Week". Will just recieved his Yellow Belt this week and over the last 8 weeks I have seen a
tremendous change in his attention in class. No more do I see him as a white belt taking baby steps. Will's
promotion to yellow belt and his determination to do well in class has earned him the title of "Student
of the Week". To both of you two young martial artist "Congratulation". Giovunni Benson & Will ForrestStudent of the week for March 6th to March 14thZelia recieved her Orange Belt in December of 2009. Since then she has been determined to do better in each class. Her continued efforts at her practice shows when she is in class. Her kata's have good technique with "chamber" at each punch or block and strong "Kiyop" when required. Zelia is choosen as "Student of the Week" for this week because she stood out from the rest with her kata's. But that isn't all, her "Courtesy" towards her Mother and Father is shown even in public (I have seen her opening doors for her mom and helping her carrying things from the car to class). This same courtesy is extended to students in our class when she is teaching the lower belt ranks their kata's. Her determination shows that she has "Perserverance" (which is our 2nd precept). Zelia is very close to recieving her "Blue Belt" because of her continued practice and her determination to stay focused in class. Keep up the good work Zelia, and always remember our schools 4th rule.
Student of the week for December 19thWhen all of you have worked so hard at being good martial artist over this last week, I can't select just one or two of you.
All of you have done so well. I'm sure Santa is going to bring you guys (and Girls) everything you need for Christmas.
I know he has already brought me my present this year. Each of you being my students is the best present ever.
Student of the week for December 13thAgain I find it extremely hard to pick just one student of the week. All my Yellow Belts are working very hard, my Purple Belts have been practicing more then normal as testing is coming closer, Orange thru Brown belts have been paying closer attention in class and have been assisting more, but I think my Red Belts have really shined this week. So I have chosen 2 of my Red Belts to be recognized this week.
Traviyon Hines & Joey BrevardBoth of these young martial artist have shown me that they have what it takes to be a Black Belt. They show up for class to help with the lower belt ranks training and they know that by doing this it helps them improve their own training. The self discipline (Self Control) shown when mistakes are pointed out to them and the efforts to correct these mistakes are to be used as examples to all my students. Currently Traviyon and Joey have been focused on honing their hand techniques (Lefty) and working on all the advanced kicks ( Jump Spinning kicks) Continue to practice Traviyon and Joey it shows in your technique. Lead by example. Your Black Belts are within your reach. I am truly proud that you two are my students. Congratulations on being recognized as students of the week.Student of the week Dec 6th
Logan PickfordLogan has shown outstanding determination to be her best when she performs her moves (she does them to the best of her ability). Her focus when practicing the kata’s has earn her recognition as student of the week for the first week in December. Her favorite thing to do is class is kicks and her favorite kick is a “roundhouse”. Believe me, she has some really good roundhouse kicks. But, Logan also has some particular traits that are needed to be a good martial artist. She has “Endeavor” which is displayed by her zeal to study and an “Indomitable Spirit”, she will not give up until she does the move correctly. This is why I have chosen Logan as student of the week. Keep on practicing Logan your orange belt is within your reach. Student of the week Nov 29th
Drew BardenDrew has been a part of the foundation of our school in Poquoson. Recently he has enjoyed participating in other sports and most recently has joined the swim team. Drew being busy with these other sports has taken away from his practice time in the martial arts. However, even with these other activities, Drew has made it to class each week. In addition he hasn’t neglected practicing what truly makes him a good martial artist “Courtesy”, “Perseverance”, & “Self Control”. Drew attended the Monday’s beginners class (the 6 to 7 class) and helped out with teaching some of the yellow belts their kata’s, during which it was pointed out to him that his blocks and punches needed some work. I have a feeling that Drew felt bad at not being perfect while teaching the yellow belts, but with a smile on his face he went right back to teaching and tried correcting the mistakes. This was a very classy act which took self control (Remember : Class never makes excuses. It takes its lumps and learns from past mistakes). Drew is chosen “Student of the week” for the last week in November because of showing determination when he accepted his mistakes and got right back to practicing to correct them and because of the courtesy he displayed by putting a smile on his face and not letting the other students see that he felt bad. Sometimes it’s not about how strong you can punch or how fast you can kick. Sometimes it’s about having the “courtesy” to do the right thing, enough “perseverance” to continue no matter what happens and the “self control” to stay the course. Good job! Drew and keep practicing to get better each day. I found it extremely hard to pick only one student for this week’s “Student of The Week”. SO, this
message is going out to ALL OF YOU. All of you have done such an outstanding job in class this week I
cannot choose just one of you as student of the week , I am proud of each and every one of you. Several new students
have joined us recently, (Caleb, Jacob, Brandon, & Destini) and because of your focus and “Self Control” in class
you are showing these new students the true meaning of becoming martial artist. It is important to look sharp and pay
attention in class (and outside of class). The better you control yourself, listen and watch, the easier the moves
become, the easier you learn, and the easier it is to protect yourselves and your families. I am choosing Destini Fertsch for “Weekly Recognized Student” for the week of November 8, 2009:
Destini FertschDestini has been my student for over 2 years now. Within that time period she has shown the determination (as you can tell by the look on her face) of a black belt, to achieve each belt rank. Destini’s main focus over the last week has been “foot position” for the 3 basic kicks. She has done extremely well with all 3 kicks especially “Side Kick”. Her efforts have earned her recognition for student of the week for the first week in November. Keep up the good work Destini. I am choosing Justice Rodriguez for “Weekly Recognized Student” for the week of October 31, 2009: Pictures to be added soon... Justice RodriguezJustice is a unique martial artist who displays all the characteristics of the precepts of our creed. In the short time that he has been with our school Justice has shown true “Integrity” on several occasions. On one occasion when asked why he wasn’t doing his “Jumping Jacks” at the end of class, Justice simple said he hadn’t practiced them good enough to do them with the rest of the class. I asked Justice to do the “Jumping Jacks”, although he knew he couldn’t do them and be good at it, he pushed through his fear of embarrassment showing “Endeavor” and did the “Jumping Jacks”. This is why I name Justice Rodriguez “Student of the Week” for the last week in October. Keep up the good work Justice. I am choosing MarQuese Wilson for “Weekly Recognized Student” for the week of October 25, 2009: MarQuese WilsonMarQuese has been my student for over a year and has achieved orange belt (very soon to be promoted to Blue Belt). He consistently puts forth a solid effort to perform all the moves with technique. MarQuese is always ready to try harder to achieve his best. This personal quality is part of our Creed known as “Endeavor”. MarQuese has demonstrated this precept since he started his martial arts training and this past week has shown it even more. This is why I have chosen him for “Student of the Week”. Keep up the good work MarQuese, practice every day and be courteous to all. I am choosing 2 students for “Weekly Recognized Students” for the week of October 18, 2009: Pictures to be added soon... Jakob DeanJakob, has been studying martial arts in our school for almost 2 years now. Although he has made the grade of “orange belt” it did not come easy for Jakob. Jakob had to work extremely hard to achieve his orange belt and he is working towards his blue belt. His perseverance is part of why he has earned recognition this week. As his teacher I have pressed him hard to do better and he has met each challenge with the same Character and Endeavor that makes him a good martial artist. Our Creed’s 4th rule “Spirit first, techniques second” is the other part of why Jakob earned student of the week recognition. Keep up the hard work Jakob and you will never regret it.
Nicolas ReyesAlso known as "Big Nick", has started to help out more and more with assisting me by teaching the lower belt ranks hand techniques and kata's. Nick is the gentle giant of our school. His courtesy (and his gentleness) towards other students truly stands out when he is showing them the "moves". But most of all, this week I noticed that "Big Nick" was trying extremely hard to improve his foot position during the kicks. This "Self Control" effort has earn him a spot as "Student of the Week". Keep up the good work Nick. Don't ever stop trying to improve yourself. I am choosing 3 students for “Weekly Recognized Students” for the week of October 11, 2009:
